A 50-year-old man travelling on a British passport will be appearing again in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court tomorrow, Monday, 8 February after he was arrested last Wednesday night at the OR Tambo International Airport for dealing in Khat.
The suspect, Graeme John Richards, 50, was arrested by members of the South African Police Service’s Border Policing Unit based at the airport after they found him in possession of 26 kilogrammes of drug Khat valued at R52, 000, 00. He was about to board a flight bound for Zürich.
He faces charges of dealing in drugs. Khat is a leafy plant, indigenous to east Africa, and is used as a stimulant when chewed.
Richard’s court appearance tomorrow will be for him to make a formal bail application, and he has been remanded in custody. The SAPS is planning to oppose bail to allow for the investigation team to conduct further investigations into the man. His passport shows that he had arrived into the country two days prior to being arrested.
